CLABSI Rate Reduction Strategy (CRRS)
A central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is a serious infection that occurs when microorganisms (usually bacteria) enter the bloodstream through the central line. Healthcare providers must follow a strict protocol when inserting the line to make sure the line remains aseptic and a CLABSI does not occur. In addition to inserting the central line properly, healthcare providers must use stringent infection control practices each time they check the line or change the dressing.
Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) poses a serious health risk for patients as it increases mortality by up to 25% and leads to an increase in the cost of health care to about $45000 per case. Therefore, the General Directorate of Infection Prevention and Control in Healthcare Facilities launched an initiative entitled “Go Green” and a strategy aimed at reducing the rate of central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) from the current national rate of 2.5 to 0.9 per 1000 central line days or even less in adult intensive care units, starting from January 2022 to December 2024 (3 years).
Vision
Mission
Aim
Strategic Goal
- To enhance and improve the knowledge of leaders, decision makers, and administrative authorities about the crucial role of the strategy and its positive impact on the healthcare facilities resources such as: reducing the CLABSI rate and saving human and financial resources.
- To ensure that the infrastructure of adult medical surgical ICUs meets the best infection prevention & control standards.
- To have adequate supplies (quantity and quality) among AICUs for appropriate central line insertion and maintenance.
- To have sufficient staff in numbers and training to deal with CLABSI insertion & maintenance.
- To improve skills and professionalism for staff via intensive training and education courses to prevent CLABSI in the targeted AICU.
- To increase the compliance and strict adherence to the CLABSI prevention bundles in healthcare facilities.
- To improve the quality of data entry via electronic surveillance system (HESN Plus).
- To study and analyze the healthcare acquired outbreaks cases related to central line devices.
- To initiate or launch a Go Green competition among national healthcare facilities.
- To monitor and evaluate CRRS KPIs quarterly, on a regular basis, and when deemed necessary for the three years' duration of the strategy.

Go Green Initiative
The Go Green Initiative is a one of the CRRS components which is a competition among national healthcare facilities. It aims to reduce the current national rate of 2,5% to 0.9% per 1000 central line days or even less in adult medical surgical ICUs.
